Preserving History & Heritage on a tiny Island.

What’s in a name??

Ok, I will admit it. I have WAY too much time on my hands waiting… And … Waiting for the sale of the new building to go through. So I’m constantly thinking about what we can do to speed up the process and what actually has to be done to the building to make it ready to move in. So it’s a good thing my friend and confidant is off the island or I would surely drive her crazy, if I havent already!!

So I’m cleaning house and driving my dog around (not in that order) Kind of pathetic I know. But during one of my endless drives (well not exactly endless, since the island is only 2&1/2 miles long) I started to really look at the homes on the island and the things that make each of them stand out. And that is either a name or some kind of adornment at the property entrance. And some of them are quite clever!.

I mean what would possess a person to name their property Sweet Potatoe? I’m really curious! It’s a really nicely done sign, with a bell and all, but why?? I kinda want to know…

And what does Falua mean? Maybe I should Google it?

I understand the need for bells, because even my own house needs something to let me know I have visitors. So maybe I should resort to the obvious like this one?

Or go with the perpetual vacation definition like,
image
Which always makes me think of margaritas or
image
Which implies we like to have fun… All the time!

Then there is the direct approach. No chance of mistaking who lives here, which I can totally relate to. I mean sometimes I just need to know where someone lives!

And this one is just covering all the bases

And what would an island be without water or at least the implication of it like,
image
Which sounds sexy just because it is in French. Or these…

And then you have the ones that just remind you of home.  Or maybe it’s just bringing a little bit of home to the island with them?

And some of my favorites……

image For some reason this looks very Las Vegas to me😀

I LOVE all of these!  I love that people are proud enough of their property to make it memorable.  And I’m proud to live in a place that we can all express our individuality.  And for those of you without signage….. What are you waiting for!!

  2. I wanted to name “our” house BALIK BAYAN BALAY. Balik Bayan is to return to one’s country and balay means house. Grammatically it is not quite correct, but I think the sentiment is perfect.

  3. Thanks, Chana I really enjoy the photos, except I want to tie pulls for all of the bells.

  4. I enjoyed this so much!

  5. Great blog! Our sign needs a serious make over though!!!

  6. Very funny. Well done.

You do have patience! Fingers crossed the deal is speedy.

Hope you are having a good Fall.

  7. Naming our property Key Lime Villa was a real process. Knox insisted we come up with 100 ideas and write them all down. This took over a week. Then we voted. I fought really hard for King Mango Hut, but in the end we chose Key Lime Villa. Our second date 22 years ago was at the Key Lime Village in Key West. So that’s how one cottage on Man-O-War got its name. Thanks for posting the lovely photos.

  8. Cave Hill…….. SIGH, still on my list of favorite places in the Whole Wide World for almost 50 years.

  9. In case you’re curious, those are Filipino words. Actually a combination of Tagalog and Cebuano, but it combines my penchant for alliteration with my fond memories of our time there on Mindanao.

  10. Love the blog, Chana! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and lovely photos. Our story: when we purchased our MOW cottage it was named “Sandcastle”, and because Dave’s last name is King, we thought it was absolutely perfect. But, to be fair, we named the little white cottage on the property the “Whitehouse”, because my last name is White. 🙂
