In a world that is growing and changing every day, do you know what a community is? Well Man O War has that down pat! Websters Dictionary says a community is a group of people working together for a common goal.
It is a Bahamian tradition to have a cook out to help raise funds for one reason or another and MOW is a perfect example of a fund raiser done right. An opportunity for the community to show their support and get some of that good food the MOW ladies are so famous for.
The Community Clinic here on Man O War sat empty for far to many years. The only way some folks saw a doctor is when one came to the island or maybe one of the second homeowners was some sort of physician and they provided advise or care when needed. But those days are over thankfully!! We have a lovely Nurse living on the island and running the clinic, Nurse Renee’ Eldon. She is doing the best she can with what she has, but the Clinic is as old as most of the homes on MOW and in dire need of renovation. So what do the good people of MOW do when funds are needed….. have a cook out!!
Nurse Renee’ and Mady Albury put together a fund raiser and the community came out in full force. For only $14 you got a Man O War size meal, complete with all those yummy sides. You know, the ones we all love but have to limit ourselves from. Mac & Cheese, potato salad, cole slaw and sweets like there was no tomorrow!! And within one hour we were sold out!! It was so great to see so many people come out and support their community. Young and old. Even some that had a hard time getting around came and sat in their golf carts, just to be a part of this event. A tiny community of only about 300, but a strong unified community if I ever saw one.
Community, a group of people unified with a common goal. Yes thats us. Aren’t we luck!!
